Places & Spaces Los Alamos Partners With AllTrails.com

Places & Spaces (PSLA) has entered into a non-profit partnership with AllTrails.com, a leading provider of information to trail users worldwide.  Under the arrangement, we have curator access to the information covering the trails on the Pajarito Plateau and in the eastern Jemez Mountains. The partnership enables a number of benefits for Places & Spaces:

  • Ability to Curate and Manage Trail Information
    • Access to the tools to directly edit and maintain the reliability of your trail data on the world's most-used trail platform.
    • Ability to manage and update route lines, starting points, parking locations, photos, and other essential details for the trails you manage.
    • Ability to communicate specific rules, regulations, and route recommendations to prepare visitors for their day on the trail.
    • Ability to help maintain reliable and accurate information, reducing confusion and increasing visitor preparedness.
  • Ability to Connect with and Inform Area Trail Users (Real-time Alerts)
    • The program provides a direct channel to communicate with AllTrails' large, engaged global community of users, including real-time safety information.
    • We can post time-sensitive updates, closures, warnings, and safety alerts directly to the trail and park pages. This has been shown to reduce search and rescue-related incidents by keeping visitors informed before they even hit the trail.
    • We can prioritize the most important information for visitors to see first.
    • We can use the platform to educate visitors on safe and sustainable practices, such as Leave No Trace principles.
    • We can feature trails and area guides in the AllTrails system. Our recommendations will be highlighted to trail users exploring the possibilities in our area.
  • Access Visitor and Trail-Use Insights - we have access to valuable data on trail use from the AllTrails' community of trail users:
    • We can review user statistics and monitor trends to understand how and when users are interacting with your trails in our area.
    • We hope this data will be useful in advocating for needed resources for maintenance and improvements by demonstrating trail usage and impact.
    • Insights on usage patterns (like heatmap data) can help us to make suggestions to prioritize maintenance efforts and plan programs based on where visitors are actually going.
  • Other Partnership Benefits - Beyond the core platform tools, the partnership also connects PSLA to funding opportunities and collaborative efforts:
    • AllTrails Stewards Fund: As an active partner, PSLA is eligible to apply for funding from the AllTrails Stewards Fund for trail projects (e.g., essential maintenance, restoration, or resiliency) and participate in marketing initiatives by AllTrails.
    • Collaborative Case Studies and Outreach: Our partnership may be highlighted in joint initiatives and case studies, spotlighting the trail systems and outdoor experiences in our area.

In short, the partnership provides PSLA with direct data-driven management tools and a massive communication platform to ensure safer, more informed, and more sustainable access to the trails in our area.

The area covered by our partnership is depicted in the following map:

PSLA will seek volunteers to work on reviewing, editing, and adding curated trails in the area. We will also explore the interest of land stewards managing the trail systems in the area (Los Alamos County, Santa Fe National Forest, Bandelier, Valles Caldera, and Pajarito Ski Mountain) in collaboration.
